The book begins with a series of interviews, the interviewee reminding you of a modern and less likable Don Quixote, who begins one story and then another, without giving an ending to the previous one, as if opening drawers to look for something and leaving them wide open.
Eventually you can tell what’s what, you can read between the lines. You start to sympathize with Alacrán who speaks his own mind whether you like it or not, and although you agreed with his points from the beginning, but weren’t too empathetic with his harsh comments, you start to understand why he is the way he is and find that you have stopped judging him for the way he behaves.
Then we lose the interviewer, something which is quiet understandable and excusable: the hero of our story cannot be tolerated for long, no matter how interesting and addictive he is. The reader, however, is hooked, hidden in the book, behind the pages and concealed in the words is a conundrum. They think they are safe and that by peeking a little more, not much harm will come to them; that the story teller cannot affect them. By moving on to the next pages we get the story from the horse’s mouth. And there is no disappointment; we receive the history and the background of the present character, a small insight, leading up to today’s Alacrán; the way he is the moment when we are first introduced to the Honey Badger, along with the interviewer.
It’s a rollercoaster of events, it’s fast paced, yet easy and entertaining to read and follow, engaging and one of those books you don’t want to put down. Even if one doesn’t end up liking the character, this hero or anti-hero, depending on the reader’s point of view, the storyline is too good for anyone to put the book down. Anyone with a political awareness and a need for justification for events that have been described differently depending on the media of each country and their benefits each time, will find some satisfaction with this outspoken and honest writing.
